Jonathan Smith
Capri and the Amalfi Coast.
Danziger Gallery is pleased to present an online exhibition of photographs of Capri and the Amalfi Coast taken by the British born photographer Jonathan Smith. His first show with the gallery, “Out of the Blue”, opened in Santa Monica in 2023 and focused on several different bodies of work shot over a 15 year period. “Capri and the Amalifi Coast” narrows the focus to the particular play of light and color of water in what is rightly considered one of the most beautiful locations in the world. In single images and his trademark diptychs Smith masters the highest resolution now available which along with his strong sense of composition create a palpable sense of "being there".
An accomplished large format photographer, Smith spent the early years of his career assisting and printing for renowned photographer Joel Meyerowitz before embarking on his own in 2010. Since then he has had solo exhibitions in the United States and internationally.
Smith’s work consists of large scale, highly nuanced color photographs of the stark natural beauty and inherent impermanence of landscapes. In addition to the Italian work, Smith has photographed in Iceland, Patagonia, Provincetown, Malibu, Miami, and up and down the east and west coasts of America. Experimenting with the forms of the single image, diptych, and triptych – Smith seeks to capture the essence of the place he is photographing in whatever format feels truest to that time and place.
He has been the recipient of a number of awards for his work including The Hearst Biennial Award, The Magenta Foundation Award, and the PDN Annual Awards. His work has appeared in numerous magazines including The Smithsonian, The Royal Photographic Society, PDN and Art and Architecture.
He received his B.A at the University for Creative Arts in Canterbury U.K and a diploma in Documentary Practice and Visual Journalism at the International Center for Photography in New York. His work is in the collections of the Museum of the City of New York, The Maison Europeéne de la Photographie, and the Victoria and Albert Museum among others.
He now lives and maintains a studio in Brooklyn.
