Press Release

Danziger Projects is pleased to present an exhibition of surfing photographs selected from the many publishing projects of Tom Adler. Adler - a noted art director and graphic designer, achieved cult status for his limited edition books exploring the visual history of surfing. Over the last decade, these books have spoken equally and eloquently to surf aficionados, photo historians, and the fashion and visual cognoscenti.

Beginning with the book "Don James: Surfing San Onofre to Point Dune: 1936-1942" published in 1997, Adler provided a compelling and authoritative historical background to the exploding interest in surf culture. Subsequent Adler publications include "Tom Blake. Surfing. 1922 – 1932."; "Surf Life 32 – 02"; "Summer Vacations"; "Dora Lives" and "Surfing Photographs from the Seventies Taken by Jeff Divine".

Also in this exhibition are images from the forthcoming book "Ron Church. California and Hawaii." Photographing in the early and mid 1960s Church recorded the last days of an era when the sport was truly amateur. (He then went on to become a noted underwater photographer and cinematographer for Jacques Cousteau.)

Additionally for this exhibition, Adler has created his own graphic artworks pairing images from various projects he has art directed and archives he has rediscovered. This exhibition combines these new works with individual prints by the photographers Adler has published.

(Photographers represented in the exhibition include: Don James, Tom Blake, Ron Church, Grant Rohloff, Joe Quigg, Sonny Miller, C.R. Stecyk, John Severson, Steve Wilkings, Ron Stoner, Art Brewer, Dewey Nicks, Greg MacGilivray, Jim Driver, Jeff Hornbaker and LeRoy Grannis.)
